DEXA Results vs. Other Methods

If you have used other testing methods such as hydrostatic weighing (Dunk Tank), Bio-Electrical Impedance (BIA) or others, don’t expect your DEXA results to be the same.

Every body composition testing technique or method is different therefore one is unable to safely presume the results will be the same. DEXA is certainly not apples-to-apples with any other method. It is truly a medical-grade, scientifically validated technique that generates honest results.

Although DEXA results may not be as flattering compared to others, you are getting not only accuracy in quantification, but precision. Precision is key in identifying true changes or fluctuations between point A & point B or from your baseline to comparative analysis.

Based on our experience, Body Fat % measured from DEXA can vary on average up-to 10% more than a dunk tank and/or BIA. Body Fat % is simply a ratio of your lean muscle mass to your fat tissue. Accurately measuring & quantifying muscle mass is important. If one method generates muscle as 150 lbs & DEXA generates muscle as 135 or 165 lbs, a +/- 15 lb difference can make a considerable difference when adjusting or projecting your daily, caloric intake.

Sure, every method has a margin of error, fortunately for you, a DEXA total body composition scan has a very minimal margin on error.
